TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men's golf team began play at the Nike Collegiate Invitational tournament in Portland, Ore. today. The Wildcats are currently in 15th place with a score of 294 (+10). Sophomores Jordan Gumberg and Jake Kreuz led the team by each carding a 72 (+1) after 18 holes, enough for a share of 46th place. Kreuz's score was mainly a product of his performance on the back nine, where he managed to capture three birdies.
Freshman Ari Gulugian and sophomore George Cunningham both notched a 75 (+4) today, which earned them part of the tie for 65th place. Gulugian took home a par on 13 holes, exemplifying his consistent and level-headed play. Cunningham had a pair of birdies on the back nine. Redshirt freshman Andrew Garner marked a 77 (+6) today and is currently holding the 74th position.
The field is particularly stacked at the NCI tournament this year, notably one of the most competitive tournaments from year to year. 11 of the 15 competing teams are ranked in the top-25 teams in the country, including No. 7 Stanford and current leader No. 14 Wake Forest. Wake Forest's Davis Womble is on top of the scorecards after finishing with a 64 (-7).
Keep an eye on the Arizona Wildcats tomorrow, as they tee off at 9:00 a.m. (MST).
