SAN DIEGO--- Junior Samantha Czarniak won the singles black draw championship and all four Wildcats won their singles matches in what was a dominating final day for Arizona at the SDSU Fall Classic II on Sunday
“It was great to see Sam win a title this weekend,” said head coach Vicky Maes. “She came out and did a very good job of controlling her emotions and focusing on the process this week. Everyone else got a win today as well, and I'm pleased with our progress. Overall, this has been a good week for the Cats. While we certainly have some glaring areas where improvement is needed, we are getting better every day and that's what matters.”
Czarniak stayed undefeated in singles play by beating UC Irvine junior Taylor LeFridge by a score of 6-0, 6-2 to take the black draw crown.
Sophomore Devin Chyphya lost her opening match of the tournament on Friday, but has stayed perfect since and defeated UC Irvine sophomore Arisha Ladhani in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 to win the red draw consolation finals.
Senior Inge Hendrikx also came away with a win in her match against Cal Poly sophomore Abigail Bacharach, taking the contest by a score of 6-3, 6-1, while Freshman Sophia Thomas continued her impressive play by beating CSUN freshman Elisaveta Nosenko 6-3, 3-6, 10-2 in a gritty three-set affair.
After their dominating day, the Wildcats end the SDSU Fall Classic II with an even record of 9-9, and end their fall season at 31-29 overall. The team will have about two months to prepare for their first spring match, which takes place in Honolulu on January 24 against the University of Hawaii.
