TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men's golf team concluded play at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Arizona in ninth place. In the third round, the Wildcats were lead by freshmen Max Donohue who carded a 68 (-2). Donohue carded a 79-68-68= 215 (+5), the best score of his colligate career to date, to tie him for 28th place with fellow freshman George Cunningham, who carded a 71-68-76= 215 (+5) in the tournament.
“It was really nice to have some good individual scores this weekend,” reflected Donohue. “I played some of the best golf I have all year. Unfortunately, it was not quite enough for our team. All the guys are working hard; I know better team scores will come in the future. We have some strong events coming up that will be good for our team to play in. Hopefully my good play can continue there.”
Senior Brenden Redfern had a solid day shooting par (70) in the third round to score a 76-72-70=218 (+8) to tie for 43rd overall. Redshirt Freshmen Jake Kreuz tied for 59th carding a 74-70-78=222 (+12). Freshmen Peter Koo scored a 75-72-78=225 (+15). Playing as an individual, senior Alex McMahon scored a 73-70-74=217 (+7) to tie him for 39th.
Head men's golf coach Jim Anderson noted, “The team battled this week but unfortunately we showed our age. We are young and showed some immaturity today. We made some uncharacteristic mistakes and compounded tough shots with bad decisions. That said, we played like a team all week and I think some of our mistakes came from the guys want to play so well for each other. We know what we need to do to prepare for The Western Intercollegiate and it is time to get everyone clicking at the same time.”
Next up, the Wildcats will travel to Santa Cruz, Calif. to compete in the Western Intercollegiate on Saturday April 11.
