TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men's golf team wrapped up the second round of the St. Mary's Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at the Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach, Calif. After a strong second round, the Wildcats moved into fifth place. Newcomer Jordan Gumberg topped the team with a 67 (-4) on the day, mainly because of his six birdies. He is currently tied for third place.
"Today I got off to a strong start. I really felt comfortable with my putter and it showed in my first three holes,” noted Gumberg. “I had a feeling that today was going to be special not just for me but for the whole team. We came back strong today and moved up the leaderboard. Tomorrow, we just need to forget about today and go out and do it again."
Freshman Tyler Moore had a strong showing with a 72 (+1) and managed a share of 31st place. Sophomore Max Donohue carded a 74 (+3) and finished the round in a tie for 28th place. Senior Kolton Lapa netted a 78 (+7), this earned him part of 50th place overall. Sophomore Jake Kreuz carded a 74 (+3) and is currently holding a share of 66th place.
“I am very pleased about our team's play today,” commented head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. “The guys were focused and we didn't let challenging situations compound. We stayed composed and played aggressive. Jordan played a great round and really carried us. I am so impressed by his process because he knows his game very well and he has shown out team he can help us compete to win. Tomorrow, look for more guys to settle in and hopefully we can see a few others post some red numbers. We are getting close."
Redshirt freshman Andrew Garner managed an 80 (+9) and stands in 73rd place. He is competing as an individual in this tournament.
The Wildcats will tee off tomorrow at 8:20 a.m.
