TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men's golf team concluded play at the Saint Mary's Invitational in Pebble Beach, Calif. today, finishing in eighth place with a team score of 297-287-299=833 (+31). Newcomer Jordan Gumberg tied for ninth in the tournament posting a 74-67-74=215 (+2). Gumberg's score came off nine birdies and an eagle throughout the tournament.
"Overall we had a great tournament. We didn't start off as well as we would have liked to, but the second round really moved us up the leaderboard,” noted sophomore Jordan Gumberg. “Unfortunately we struggled as a team today, but for the first tournament as a very young group I would say we had a good finish. I know the guys are really excited to compete again in New Mexico next week.”
Sophomore Max Donohue posted a 73-74-72=219 (+6) to give him a share of 23rd place. Donohue tallied four birdies in the third round. Freshman Tyler Moore ended the tournament with a share of 37th place behind a score of 76-72-76=225 (+11). Kolton Lapa started his senior season with a score of 77-78-78=230 (+17) to tie him at 61st place. Lapa carded five birdies and an eagle over three rounds.
“Our guys fought hard today and we just couldn't get anything going,” noted head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. “We made a few too many bogeys and really didn't find the hole on birdie opportunities. It was great to see Max fight back on the back to post 72 and Jordan's week is a great sign for the team. We will get back to work for two weeks in preparation for Albuquerque.”
Sophomore Jake Kruez shared a spot of 71st place with a score of 81-74-77=232 (+19). Playing as an individual, redshirt freshman Andrew Garner placed 77th with a score of 77-80-78=235 (+22).
Next up, the Wildcats will compete at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M.
