Box Score SEATTLE – Dejza James scored 10 points and Malena Washington and Taryn Griffey each added eight, but the Arizona Wildcats dropped their second straight Pac-12 road game, losing to Washington 63-47 Sunday afternoon at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Wildcats (10-6, 1-3 Pac-12) started hot from the floor and led 9-3 in the early minutes of the game. Keyahndra Cannon and Griffey both hit 3-pointers during the stretch and JaLea Bennett finished off a three-point play off a foul.
The Huskies responded with an 11-0 run to take a 14-9 lead with 4:27 to play in the opening quarter. Washington eventually stretched the lead to 19-11, but a pair of LaBrittney Jones free throws and a basket from Keyahndra Cannon cut it to four with 32 seconds left in the first. But the Huskies got a bucket from Kelsey Plum, the nation's leading scorer, with seven seconds left to give Washington a six-point lead at the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, Plum scored a quick five points and Chantel Osahor contributed a bucket to stretch Washington's lead to 30-19 with 5:57 to play in the half. The Wildcats looked to cut into Washington's lead, but the Huskies held the Cats in check while still scoring and took a 38-27 lead at halftime.
Jones opened the second half with a free throw to make it a 10-point game, but Washington again responded with an 8-0 run to take a 46-28 lead with 6:39 to play in the third. The Huskies extended their lead to 17 when they took a 50-33 lead with 5:07 to play in the period.
Over the last five minutes of the quarter, the Wildcats went on an 8-0 run of their own to make it a nine-point game at 50-41 at the end of the third. The Huskies didn't score over the last 5:07. Griffey and Malena Washington both hit 3-pointers during the stretch to cut into the lead.
But the Huskies opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run over the first six-plus minutes of the frame and took a 60-41 lead with 4:12 to play. That ended Arizona's comeback threat.
The Wildcats play next on Friday at home vs. Utah. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
