TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men's golf team opened its spring campaign at home in the Arizona Intercollegiate on Friday. After the first round of play, Arizona stands tied for fourth place with a score of 292 (+8). Leading the Wildcats and finishing the round in the top 20 were senior Kolton Lapa and freshmen Tyler Moore and Martin Larrea.
Lapa carded a 70 (-1), on the round off four birdies and an eagle on a par five to give him a share of seventh place. Larrea and Moore notched a 73 (+2) in the opening round of the tournament to give them a share of 15th place. Larrea's score came off four birdies while Moore's came off three.
Also competing for the Wildcats are sophomores Jake Kreuz and Jordan Gumberg. Kreuz stands tied for 45th place with a score of 76 (+5) coming off three birdies. Gumberg netted a 78 (+7) to give him a share of 57th place.
“Our team did a pretty good job off the start executing and hitting the ball in the places we needed to,” commented head men's golf coach Jim Anderson, “however we were cold with our putters. We made too many mistakes on the greens in the beginning of the round, rather the beginning of the day. Our mistakes lead to mental mistakes that we cannot afford to make. We became impatient and tried to force things into greens, which only compounded at the end of the day."
The coach continued: "Kolton did a great job of staying patient all day and finishing the day at even par is what we need from our senior leader. It is imperative that tomorrow that we come out ready to play and finish round two strong because there are shots to be picked up in our finishing holes. Round three will require us to be clocked in mentally to pick up the shots we lost today. We will give it our best all the way to the finish tomorrow.”
The second round of play began, but was not finished. Arizona, thru 15-16 is tied for 10th with a team score of 564 (+31). Kolton Lapa is currently one over with a score of 70-64=134 thru 16 and is tied for 10th. Freshman Tyler Moore is tied for 56th thru 15 with a score of 73-69=142 (+11). Kreuz shares a slice of 59th place with a score of 76-70=146 (+12) thru 16. Jordan Gumberg currently sits tied for 63rd with a score of 78-69=147 (+13) thru 16 on the day. Martin Larrea netted a score of 73-75=148 (+18) thru 15 to give him a share of 76th place.
