San Diego, Calif- The Arizona Wildcats are headed back to Tucson after a successful third and final day at the University of San Diego Invitational.
 
"I'm really happy with how we finished the tournament," said head coach Clancy Shields. "I thought we improved throughout the weekend and we left it all on the court as a group. We need to continue improving in a lot of areas before we start the team season in January. These next few months will define our spring season."
 
Arizona began day-three competition with doubles play where they took two of three doubles matches against Utah State. Senior Oliver Plaskett and Junior Trent Botha took down Jonas Maier and Jack Swindells (8-5) while senior Shoki Kasahara and sophomore Shoti Meparidze defeated Kai Wehnelt and Samuel Serrano (8-3).
 
In singles play, freshman Alejandro Reguant finished the tournament with a 3-1 record after besting Denver freshman Fernandez Del Valle in a tiebreaker (7-5, 4-6, 10-4).
 
Three other Wildcats took matches against Denver players: Plaskett took down junior Mark Ihrig in two close sets (7-6(7), 7-6(6)), Botha defeated junior Zach Fryer (6-1, 6-4), and sophomore Shoti Meparidze bested sophomore Ignatius Castelino (6-2, 6-1).
 
Seniors Shoki Kasahara and Harry Busby entered Sunday  with a chance at finishing undefeated in singles play, but both veterans lost 10-8 in tiebreakers and finish the tournament with a 3-1 singles record.
 
With the conclusion of their fall season, the Cats now have a little over two months to prepare for their dual match, which will be against Texas Tech on January 13th in Orlando Florida.
