TUCSON, Ariz. -Â Arizona softball welcomed back more than 60 former players, coaches and managers for its annual alumni game at Hillenbrand Stadium on Sunday. The Wildcats honored the 1997 and 2007 National Championship teams for their respective 20 and 10 year reunions.
Autumn Champion-Schur was also recognized for her induction into the Arizona Hall of Fame this year as well as Pac-12 All-Century team members
Caitlin Lowe-Nagy, Amy Chellevold-Hillenbrand, Susie Parra and Pac-12 Coach of the Century
Mike Candrea.
Candrea welcomed back players from all three decades in the alumni game, All-Americans and national champions that helped build the dynasty and make days like these so special. Additionally, Arizona welcomed back a trio of pioneers that paved the way for the dynasty, Ronni Kotwica, Mary Hines and Irma Fizceri. Hines, Arizona's Outstanding Sportswoman in 1952, and Ficzeri, Arizona's Outstanding Sportswoman in 1964, threw out the ceremonial first pitches.
The former and current Wildcats split into two teams, red and blue, with the more veteran alumni joining Arizona's upperclassmen on the red team while the more recent alumni joined Arizona's underclassmen on the blue team.
The festivities got underway with a home run contest.
Alyssa Palomino defeated Lindsey Collins in the finals to take home the title.
The game lasted just four innings, with pitching dominating. Arizona's current pitchers,
Danielle O'Toole,
Taylor McQuillin,
Nancy Bowling and
Michelle Floyd took turns in the circle with one alum, Taryne Mowatt, pitching as well.
The game was scoreless heading into the third, when Malia Martinez and Champion began the inning with back-to-back singles. After they moved over on a deep fly ball, Sam Banister plated a run with a groundout. An error brought another run in to give the blue team a 2-0 lead.
Katiyana Mauga responded with an RBI in the bottom half, but it would be all the red team would get as blue hung on to win, 2-1.
