TUCSON, Ariz. – The Pac-12 Conference announced its 2016 All-Pac-12 teams on Tuesday and Arizona's senior offensive standouts
Samajie Grant,
Nate Phillips and
Trey Griffey were named honorable mention selections.
Grant, a three-year starting receiver, converted to running back midway through the season with several strong rushing performances. None was more notable than his 176 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries in the Territorial Cup championship last Friday. Those totals gave Grant 461 rushing yards and six touchdowns in five games as a running back, an average of 92.2 yards per game that would have ranked fifth-best in the Pac-12. As a receiver, Grant finished with 22 receptions for 247 and three touchdowns, giving the Compton, Calif., native nine total touchdowns and 708 yards of total offense – both second-best on the team.
Phillips finished his four-year career as a starting receiver by catching a pass in 45 consecutive games played. The Chandler, Ariz., native hauled in a team-best 33 receptions as a senior, gaining 414 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He capped his career with a 64-yard touchdown last Friday in the Territorial Cup against rival Arizona State. The standout, along with Grant, was one of four seniors voted a team captain for the season. Phillips also had seven punt returns for 34 yards as the starting returner.
Griffey started all 12 games in his final season with the Wildcats, emerging as a consistent big play threat in the passing game. The Orlando, Fla., native finished third on the team in both catches (23) and yards (382) while adding two touchdowns. Of his 23 grabs, 16 were for first downs or touchdowns and he averaged 16.6 yards per reception – second-best on the team. Unnoticed in the stats was Griffey's steady blocking on the perimeter that helped Arizona finish the season as the Pac-12 rushing leader with 235.0 yards per game, boosted by a school-record 511 yards last Friday against Arizona State.
The Pac-12 will announce its annual All-Academic honors on Wednesday.
