Box Score Tucson, Ariz. – LaBrittney Jones reached double figures for the sixth time in the past seven games and posted her first double-double of the season, but the Arizona Wildcats fell to USC 67-57 Friday night at McKale Center.
Jones finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats. She's scored in double figures in four straight games and nine times this season total. But USC got a game-high 24 points from guard Courtney Jaco, shot 8 of 14 from the floor. As a team, USC shot 44 percent and got to the free throw line 21 times.
“We have to play more disciplined; play without fouling,” coach Niya Butts said after the game. “We have to score; have to knock down some of those shots. We didn't do that. We had a lead in the first quarter, but allowed them to stay around, and then we had to play catch up.”
USC took a 31-20 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Trojans shot 48 percent from the field and got 13 first-half points from guard Courtney Jaco. Center Temi Fagbenle chipped in with eight points and six rebounds. Jones led the Wildcats in the first half with six points and three rebounds in 16 minutes. Fagbenle finished with 16 points and nine rebounds.
Despite the halftime deficit, the Wildcats (11-12, 2-9 Pac-12) outrebounded the Trojans 19-11 and posted six assists compared to USC's five.
The Wildcats started strong and led for more than eight minutes in the first quarter. Leading 8-7, the Wildcats got back-to-back buckets from Destiny Graham to stretch the lead to 12-7 with 2:24 remaining in the first quarter. That remained the score until two seconds left in the quarter when Jaco hit a 3-pointer right before the period ended.
The Trojans (17-6, 5-6) then scored the first five points of the second quarter to take their first lead of the game at 15-12. JaLea Bennett then scored to cut it to one at 15-14. But USC again responded, going on a 9-2 run to snag a 24-16 lead. The Cats cut the lead to 25-20 when Breanna Workman hit two free throws, but USC ended the half on a 6-0 run to take an 11-point lead at halftime.
Arizona held USC to 12 of 30 shooting in the second half and outrebounded the Trojans for the game 45-31 Workman finished with nine points and a season-high eight rebounds in the loss. Bennett had seven points in the loss, her highest point total in seven games. The Wildcats had seven players register at least three rebounds in the game.
“We got on the glass; we out rebounded them,” Butts said. “We did a really good job with that, but we gave it right back to them with 21 turnovers.”
The Wildcats will play next on Sunday against UCLA. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
