TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men's golf team competed the first round of The Goodwin on Thursday, March 24. The Cats ended the first round with a score of 293 (+13) tied with Fresno State, Nevada, BYU, SMU, and USC for 15th place.
Leading the Cats in day one of the competition was redshirt freshman Andrew Garner who is tied for sixth. Garner shot two of his three birdies and an eagle on the back nine to help him achieve a score of 68 (-2). Sophomore Jordan Gumberg shot a 71 (+1) in the first round coming off five birdies, four of which were carded on the back ninie, to give him a share of 28th.
“We had two guys really carry us today on the back nine,” commented head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. “Tomorrow, we need to do a better job getting off to a good start and keeping all five guys in the round. Driving the ball well is rewarded, so we need to step it up there and let it go off the tee shots."
Senior Kolton Lapa and reshirt sophomore Jake Kreuz are tied for 104th with a score of 77 (+7). Sophomore Max Donohue shot an 81 (+11) to tie him for 134th.
The Wildcats tee off tomorrow at 1:20 p.m. MST.
