TUCSON, Ariz., The Wildcats played their first conference match Friday but couldn't come out with the win, as they were defeated by Stanford 4-1.    

"We put ourselves in good position today, winning four first sets in singles," said head coach Tad Berkowitz.  "Good teams like Stanford bounce back. I felt we competed well today and gave ourselves a chance."

The Cats fought hard in doubles play but Stanford ended up taking the point. Will Kneale and Oliver Plaskett lost to Tom Fawcett and Maciek Romanowi on court one 6-2.

Naoki Takeda and Will Adkisson defeated Nolan Paige and David Wilczynski 6-4 on court two, leaving it up to court three to clinch the point.

Jason Jaruvang and Shoki Kasahara played hard but were defeated by Yale Goldberg and Sameer Kumar 6-3.

Stanford went into singles play with a 1-0 lead over Arizona but Will Kneale quickly tied up the score as he defeated No. 101 Sameer Kumar 6-2, 6-3 on court three.

Jason Jaruvang was beat by David Wilczynski 6-2, 6-3 on court two, while Oliver Plaskett was beat by Maciek Romanowicz 6-1, 6-2 on court five, giving Stanford a 3-1 lead.

Trent Botha challenged Nolan Paige to three sets but fell short on court four 1-6, 6-0, 6-2, giving Stanford their fourth point they needed to win the match.

Naoki Takeda beat No. 6 Tom Fawcett in his first set 6-4 on court one, the match was abandoned in the second set, along with Shoki Kasahara's in his third set.  

The Cats will be back in action on Sunday to take on Cal at 1 p.m. MST at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
