TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men's golf team concluded the first round of play at the 70th annual Western Intercollegiate at the Pasatiempo Golf Club on Monday. The Cats are tied for 12th place with a score of 370 (+20).
Leading the Cats in day one of the competition was senior Kolton Lapa. Lapa matched his career low 18 hole score of 69 (-1) coming off a pair of birdies and an eagle. The senior sits in 13th place after 18 holes of play.
"Today was a good day for my confidence,” said Lapa. “I needed today to help my mindset and I am really pleased to start the tournament off with a good round. Our team didn't have our best day but I'm excited to see how we do the next two days.”
“Kolton carried us with another great round and we will challenge the team to wake up tomorrow prepared to put the ball in the best places to score,” said head men's golf coach Jim Anderson.
Redshirt sophomore Jake Kreuz and freshman Martin Larrea share a piece of 59th place with a score of 74 (+4). Kreuz carded the most birdies for Arizona with five, while Larrea attributed three of the Cats 16 birdies.
Anderson continued; “Pasatiempo Golf Course presents a great challenge. Our guys competed all the way to the end but we didn't have our best day from top to bottom. If we stay patient, we will see consistent improvement this week.”
Freshman Tyler Moore shot six over to score a 76 (+6) in the first round to give him a share of 73rd place. Sophomore Jordan Gumberg is tied for 78th with a score of 77 (+7). Sophomore Peter Koo is notched a 78 (+8) to tie him for 80th place.
The Cats tee of tomorrow at 8:45 a.m. MST.
