Gumberg, Kreuz Lead Cats in Day Two of Pac-12 Championships

TUCSON, Ariz.– The University of Arizona men's golf team competed in the third round of the Pac-12 Championships on Saturday. The Cats ended the day in a tie for 9th place with a score of 1,102 (+37).

Sophomore Jordan Gumberg led the Cats in day two of the competition, shooting a 69 (-2). For the tournament, Gumberg has 13 birdies over three rounds, with five coming Saturday. He ended the day with a score of 208 (-5), tied for sixth place, nine strokes behind the leader form California, K.K. Limbhasut.

“Today started off as a struggle,” said Gumberg, “tougher pin placements and higher wind speeds made the course play tough early on. I was able to make an early birdie on my back nine that got the ball rolling and my goal was just to get back under par for the day.”

After two rounds at even par, redshirt sophomore Jake Kreuz went one under in the first round to score a 70 (-1). The New York native shot three of his seven birdies in the second day of play to tie him for 15th place with a score of 212 (-1). This is the lowest score Kreuz has posted through 54 holes in his collegiate career. Redshirt freshman Austin Stadeli shot a 79 (+8) in the second day of play to tie him for 59th with a score of 228 (+15).

“We battled all day and really hung in there after a very difficult start,” said head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. “Hole locations were more challenging and we were a little impatient with decisions. Thankfully, no on panicked and we finished our second nine close to even par. If we pick up tomorrow where we left off today, we can have our best round of the week. Jordan and Jake are fully committed to their process and it is fun to stay out of their way. They are playing with confidence, making smart decisions, and carrying our team this week.”

Freshman Martin Larrea and sophomore Peter Koo end day two tied for 68th place with a score of 231 (+18). Koo shot a 78 (+7) in the second round and Larrea shot an 81 (+10). Senior Kolton Lapa closes out day two in 71st place with a score of 237 (+24).

The Cats tee off tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. MST for 18 holes of golf on the final day of the competition.
