TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men's golf team competed in the first day of competition at the 14th annual Wyoming Cowboy Classic on Monday, April 4. The Cats ended the first two rounds tied with Utah for seventh with a score of 577 (+1).
Leading the Cats was sophomore Jordan Gumberg, who finished the day with a score of 138 (-6) off 11 birdies, tying for fourth overall, and in birdies made. In the first round, the sophomore shot a 68 (-4) coming off six birdies, hitting three on the front and back nine. In the second round, Gumberg went two under to shoot a 70 (-2) on five birdies.
“Everything went as planned today,” commented sophomore Jordan Gumberg, “I had a game plan and executed it to the best of my ability. I'm excited for another 18 holes out here because there are a lot of scoring chances. Tomorrow we just need to go out and play Wildcat golf."
Redshirt sophomore Jake Kreuz sits tied for 12th after the first day of the competition with a score of 141 (-3). Kreuz shot even par (72) in the first round, notching five birdies in the process. In the second round, Kreuz shot a career low 69 (-3), netting three birdies.
“It is good to get a sub-par round in as a team this afternoon,” commented head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. “We are capable of more but we want to take away expectation of score and focus on getting the ball in play off the tee. Jordan (Gumberg) remains rock solid. Getting Jake to jump into the lineup at the last minute and post great scores is a jolt for our team too. Tomorrow we will balance remaining patient while being aggressive as scoring conditions remain optimal.”
Senior Kolton Lapa finishes the day tied for 63rd with a score of 148 (+4). The senior notched seven birdies in day one. Sophomore Peter Koo ended the day with a score of 151 (+7), tied for 83rd. Redshirt Freshman Andrew Garner went nine over to score a 153 (+9).
Tyler Moore, Max Donohue, and Martin Larrea competed for the Wildcats as Individuals. Freshman Tyler Moore finishes day one carding a tied for 29th with a score of 144 (E). Martin Larrea shot a 146 (+2) in the first two rounds of play to tie him at 45th place. Sophomore Max Donohue shot a 152 (+8) to tie him for 88th.
The Cats tee off tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. MST.
