FORT HUACHUCA – After an emotional Friday afternoon that saw the Arizona Wildcats players and staff attend the funeral and celebration of life of teammate
Zach Hemmila, the team headed to Fort Huachuca, a US Army post 75 miles southeast of Tucson.
The Wildcats arrived at the post Friday evening and promptly participated in some team building activities, before an early bedtime. The squad woke up Saturday and practiced at Bujalski Field on installation grounds. The practice ran about 90 minutes and was open to residents of Fort Huachuca.
"It's a great atmosphere with the mountains surrounding you," coach
Rich Rodriguez said after the practice. "Having a different venue is good. Our guys have done pretty well. Yesterday was obviously a long day, but it's good to get back to work this morning."
The Cats practiced in just jerseys and shorts, but had a productive session in a hot environment with the conditions feeling warmer than the high 80s temperature. Quarterbacks
Anu Solomon and
Brandon Dawkins both tossed long touchdowns and
Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles had a highlight-reel interception on defense.
Rodriguez was pleased with the practice and enjoys bringing his team to Fort Huachuca every year for some team bonding time. The team will attend a dinner Saturday night on post grounds with local soldiers and generals.
"My favorite part of the weekend is always the dinner with the soldiers," Rodriguez said. "This trip is obviously a bonding experience in a different environment. You're staying in a barracks. There are no distractions for us, which is good. You just come together to work."
The trip came at a good time for the Wildcats, who are coming off an extremely difficult week following the passing of Hemmila on Monday. The entire team attended Hemmila's visitation on Thursday and the funeral on Friday at a local church in Tucson. Following the funeral, the team attended a reception at the Sands Club at Arizona Stadium to celebrate Hemmila's life.
"I thought it was very well done," Rodriguez said of the funeral. "Certainly it's a sad time. It was emotional for a lot of folks. We had a nice service at the Sands Club at the stadium. We're really appreciative of the athletic department and all the other athletes and coaches who came out for that."
The Cats will return to Tucson on Sunday and will get the day off from practice, before returning to the Kindall/Sancet Practice Fields on Monday.
Play of the Day: Solomon to Griffey
Backed up near the end zone, quarterback
Anu Solomon made the throw of the practice when he found
Trey Griffey streaking down the sideline. Solomon took a shotgun snap and was given time to throw by his offensive line. He spotted Griffey getting open and heaved a pass halfway down the field. Griffey hauled it in around the 50-yard line and took it the rest of the way for a touchdown. Honorable mention in this department came when
Brandon Dawkins found
Samajie Grant for a touchdown on a similar play.
Assistant Coach Spotlight: Calvin Magee
Magee is preparing to enter his fifth season on coach
Rich Rodriguez's staff as the running backs coach and co-offensive coordinator. Magee has had no shortage of producing talent at running back since his arrival in Tucson. Magee has worked with Ka'Deem Carey, Daniel Jenkins,
Nick Wilson,
Orlando Bradford and others. Wilson and Bradford figure to lead the way for Magee at running back this season and form a potent rushing attack. Magee has coached with Rodriguez at West Virginia and Michigan before coming to Arizona.
