PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – After Friday's match action was canceled due to rain, the Wildcats had a busy day on Saturday at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. Both
Lauren Marker and
Samantha Czarniak, Arizona's sole competitors in the main event, played two matches.

Andrew Veeder was pleased with what he saw from his players: "Today was a solid day of competition with all of the players being tested," said Veeder. "These are great events to tune up for the season and get some quality matches under our belt. I'm very happy with how the team came out and were hungry to compete again after the winter break."
No. 18 Marker won her first round match against Baylor's Rhiann Newborn 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2. Her run at a championship came to an end in the round of 16, as she lost to USC's Gabby Smith 6-0, 6-3. Meanwhile, Czarniak was eliminated in the first round after falling 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 to Gabriela Porubin (Wichita State). She advanced in the second round by default.
The Wildcats also had five competitors in the Springs Collegiate Invite, which took place in Palm Springs as well.
Maggie Cohen lost to Daniella Roldan of Texas, 6-2, 6-3. In the second round, she defeated USD's Sophia Chow 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
Marie Van Aelst came away with victories in both matches she played. She also defeated Chow, 6-2, 6-2. In her second match, she beat Chelsea Crovetti (Texas) 7-6(4), 6-1.
Devin Chypyha dropped her first match to Maria-Paula Torres (USD) 6-4, 6-0. She won her second match against Texas' Dani Wagland 7-5, 7-6(1).
Camila Wesbrooks lost to Anna Turati, also of Texas, 6-4, 7-5. In the second round, she knocked off Torres 6-3, 6-4.

Marker and Czarniak will commence their run in the doubles tournament, as their first match will take place at 8 a.m. PST on Sunday.
