PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – After a brief winter break, the Wildcats enjoyed a successful return to tournament action at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. Both
Lauren Marker and
Samantha Czarniak completed their final tune-ups before dual matches commence in two weeks.
"Overall, it was a very good day," said assistant coach
Andrew Veeder. "I think we ended these tournaments on a high note. I know the team is itching to get into the swing of dual matches and compete as a team."
No. 18 Marker and Czarniak competed in their final doubles match of the tournament schedule. They fell to the University of Texas, 6-3. In the consolation singles bracket, Czarniak defeated Katie Poluta (Texas) 6-7(6), 6-3, (10-7).
Four other Wildcats also competed in Palms Springs, in the Springs Collegiate Invite. In doubles,
Devin Chypyha/
Maggie Cohen fell to Anderson/Torres (USD) 6-1. They won their second match of the day 6-4 over San Diego's Chow/Barkdull.
Camila Wesbrooks/
Marie Van Aelst defeated Wagland/Roldan of Texas 6-4. They later lost to Garcia/Kukaras (USD) 6-2. In singles action, Chypyha beat Sophia Chow (USD) 6-1, 6-1. Cohen won a 6-3, 6-0 match over Chelsea Crovetti of Texas. Wesbrooks moved past Dani Wagland (Texas) 6-4, 6-4. Van Aelst was defeated by San Diego's Kukaras 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.
Up Next: Arizona will now turn its attention to the dual match season, as they take on Northern Arizona University in Tucson on Saturday, January 28 at 10 a.m. MST.
