Baseball Set to Open Fall Practice

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats baseball team will open fall practice Saturday night with a 6 p.m., intrasquad scrimmage at Hi Corbett Field.
Saturday's scrimmage kick-off Arizona's fall season, which runs until Nov. 19. The Wildcats will hold 18 intrasquad scrimmages before the fall culminates with the Wild vs. Cats World Series, set for Nov. 17-19.
"We are excited to start our fall team training period," coach Jay Johnson said. "Our players have done a good job this first month in the weight room and during individual skill instruction, and we are ready to progress forward in our next step of building the 2018 team."
The Wildcats are preparing for their third season under Johnson. The coach led Arizona to a 38-21 record last season and a second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Wildcats let the Pac-12 in runs scored, batting average, doubles, triples, RBI and walks last season.
Arizona will welcome back several offensive threats from the 2017 team, headlined by seniors Cal Stevenson and Mitchell Morimoto, juniors Alfonso Rivas and Cesar Salazar and sophomore Nick Quintana. Also back from last year's team are Ryan Haug, Cameron Cannon, Matt Fraizer and others.
Rivas slots in as one of the top returning hitters in the country this season. Rivas hit .371 last season as a sophomore with 13 doubles, seven home runs and 63 RBI. The 63 RBI are the most by an Arizona underclassman since Jeff Van Houten drove in 72 runs in 2003.
On the mound, the Wildcats return juniors Cody Deason and Michael Flynn, both of whom logged more than 50 innings last year with sub-four ERAs. Seniors Robby Medel, Juan Aguilera, Tylor Megill and Seve Romo also return, along with sophomore Randy Labaut, who tossed 31 2/3 innings last year.
The Cats also welcome in 18 newcomers and a Top 25 recruiting class to join Johnson and the Wildcats. Arizona will open its 2018 season Feb. 16 at home versus Bryant.
