TUCSON, Ariz. – Head coach
Clancy Shields announced that Gavin Spencer, a four-star recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net, has signed a National Letter of Intent, and will join the team for the 2018-19 season.
Â
"We are excited to welcome Gavin to the Wildcat family," said Shields. "I have spent a lot of time getting to know Gavin and sharing my vision for the program. From day one he has bought into the future of what Arizona tennis can and should be, and he is committed to making that vision a reality. From a coaches perspective, I have a lot of time for players like Gavin who excel in the classroom, who put in the daily grind of driving over two hours to practice, and who love to play tournaments and put it on the line. I think Gavin has tremendous upside in his game, and he is just starting to unlock his potential as a player. We look forward to his arrival next fall and excited to see his growth as a player this next year. Bear Down and welcome to the Old Pueblo!"
Â
Spencer, who has been ranked as high as 87th in the Nation and 13th in his home state of California, attends San Juan Hills High School and will be the second in his family to become a Wildcat as his mother, Caroline, is an alumni.
Â
"I knew that U of A was the right fit for me from the first time I visited when I was about 10 years old to play in the Copper Bowl," said Spencer. "Since then, I have returned to Tucson and the campus whenever there was a tournament in town. I absolutely love the community spirit and support for the University and the college town atmosphere. Since my mom and grandmother are both alumni, I have been able to hear about all of the great experiences that they had as Wildcats. The fact that the coaching staff invests so much time in developing each player on the team will also allow me to develop my game to the next level. The coaches care about my academic success and provide the support required so that I can excel in the classroom as well. I also felt very comfortable with the overall structure of the program since I think it is very similar to the values and goals that I have lived by and aspire to. To compete in the Pac 12 has always been a goal. I can't wait to see what the next four years will bring and hope that I can add great value to the team."
