NEW YORK, N.Y. – Arizona's track and field team was in action for day one of the Armory Track Invitational in New York, N.Y. and was again led by star athlete Sage Watson.
Sage Watson broke the Canadian and NCAA record in the 500-meter race as she took first at 1:08.40, a mark that was also better than the current American record. That mark was clearly a new facility record for the Armory Track, previously held by former Wildcat and Watson's training partner Georganne Moline. Watson set the school record for the 500-meter last year at the Armory Track Invitational, but this year she had her eyes set on more.
"Sage was just special today with the NCAA, facility, Canada and American record," head coach Fred Harvey said. "It was also the fastest time in the world. There is not much more to say about that special of a performance."
Miles Parish ran the fastest collegiate time in the 500-meter today at a time of 1:02.22.
"This season Miles has been three for three in top level national performances," Harvey said. "Today he continued that with the top NCAA time in the country."
Justice Summerset took first in the high jump at 2.17 meters (7' 1.5") He has cleared seven feet in the high jump in every meet he has competed in this season.
"Justice continues to perform at the highest level as a true freshman," Harvey said. "He won the high jump again and is truly a special athlete"
Lisanne Hagens took first in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.78 meters (5' 10"). Freshman Karla Teran took third at 1.74 meters (5' 8.5").
Brena Andrews ran a time of 7.60 in the 60-meter dash prelims to qualify for the semifinals. Her semifinal time of 7.63 seconds was not enough to qualify her into the final, however.
Michael Demby took fifth-overall in the 400-meter race while teammate his teammate David Egbo was able to finish in ninth. Egbo also ran a new indoor personal best in the event.
"Today was a great day," Harvey said. "It was a great day to be a track and field Wildcat and to be a Wildcat fan."
The Track Cats will be in action tomorrow for day two of the Armory Track Invitational with events beginning at 7 am. MST.
