SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – The University of Arizona men's golf team competed in the opening to rounds of The Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic on Monday, March 13th. The Cats posted a 585 (+9) in the opening day of the contest to place 11th after two rounds.
"We played well for about 30 holes today," commented head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. "Our guys were patient and we handled several challenges very well in and around the greens. We are prepared for more of the same tomorrow and with improved focus, we should be able to post a great number."
Leading the Cats on the opening day of the contest was junior Jordan Gumberg. The junior recorded 10 birdies in the first day of play to earn a 144 (E). Gumberg is in a tie for fifth in par-4 scoring and is also tied for third in birdies made. The Fort Lauderdale native will go into the final round of play in a tie for 18th place.
"Today was a grind," commented Gumberg, "San Diego country club is as pure as it gets. This course will put you in your place if you're not hitting it well. I started out hot right from the start with three birdies in a row and just tried to keep the pedal down. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to keep the pace going but feel confident in how I played today. The team needs to come out tomorrow with a fresh mind and get ready pick off some of the teams in front of us."
Junior George Cunningham notched a 145 (+1) on the opening day of the competition. The Tucson product ranks in the top-20 in par-3 scoring and in birdies made with 8. Cunningham will enter the final round of the competition in a tie for 27th place.
Freshmen David Laskin and Briggs Duce recorded a 148 (+4) in the opening two rounds of the tournament. The pair combined for 10 birdies and Duce notched an eagle in the first round of play. The freshmen will enter the final day of play in a tie for 46th place.
Senior Redford Bobbitt will go into the final day of competition in a tie for 54th place with a score of 149 (+5). Bobbitt posted seven birdies on the first day of play.
Junior Max Donohue made his season debut in San Diego entering the competition as an Individual. Donohue will go into day two of the competition in a tie for 67th place with a score of 152 (+8).
Tee off is set for 8:30 a.m. MST for the final round of play.
