SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – The University of Arizona men's golf team concluded play in the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic on Tuesday in 11th place. The Cats shot even par in the final round of play to finish with an 873 (+9).
"Our team is improving," commented head men's golf coach Jim Anderson, "and today was a tough finish to what was looking like a great round. We turned at (-9) so it was looking like we were competing with anyone. We made some mental errors and hit poor shots that really set us back. We need to improve and learn from this. The positive is that every guy stayed in it mentally and we finished our round."
Leading the Cats throughout the two-day contest was junior Jordan Gumberg. The Fort Lauderdale product ends the competition in a tie for 18th place. Gumberg Ranks in the top five in par-4 scoring with a 3.97 average (-1), and is tied for third in eagles made after notching one on the 14th hole of the final round. Gumberg notched 13 birdies to score a 215 (-1) after three rounds of play.
"I played well today," commented Gumberg, "I just needed to clean up a few mistakes. I missed it in a few tricky areas and really had no shot. I'm happy to have played 3 tournaments in a row pretty solid and I'm just excited for what the rest of what spring has to bring."
Freshman David Laskin went two under in the final day of the competition to finish with a 218 (+2). The freshman recorded nine birdies in the three-day contest and finishes in a tie for 28th place. Junior George Cunningham finishes play in a tie for 34th place with a score of 219 (+3). The Tucson native recorded nine birdies throughout play.
Senior Redford Bobbitt and freshman Briggs Duce conclude play in a tie for 50th place. The duo combined for 18 birdies and Duce was one of 25 players in the competition to post an eagle. Duce and Bobbitt conclude play scoring a 222 (+6).
Junior Max Donohue competed in the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic competing as an individual. Donohue finishes play in a tie for 66th place with a score of 227 (+11).
Up next, the Cats will travel to Tempe, Ariz. to compete in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational.
