TUCSON, Ariz.– Arizona's No. 1 pair of
Madison Witt and
McKenna Witt tied for third in the Pairs Championships as they played in their last match on BearDown Beach on Saturday afternoon.
The No. 5 seeded Witt twins started the morning of play taking on UW's No 4 seed of Tia Scambray and Crissy Jones. The senior twin duo pulled away with a victory, which was their first victory of the season against UW, (21-13, 21-14).
The Witts went on to compete against, USC's Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes, the No. 1 seed. In a two-set rally, the tandem fell to USC coming close in an emotional second set, (15-21, 18-21).
"Sara and Kelly are awesome," said
Madison Witt. "We train with them in the summers. We went to Estonia with them last summer. We're actually really close. We love them & love playing them. We would love to beat them, and I think one day you'll see that, so be ready."
Madison and McKenna lead the team with a concluding (21-8) record. With 10 consecutive wins, the Witt's hold longest winning streak on the team for the season. The twins, with the No. 3 pair of
Hailey Devlin and
Sam Manley lead the team with records this season. Madison and
McKenna Witt leave the team with the highest overall career record of (85-35) in Arizona Beach Volleyball history.
"It was really emotional at the end. We weren't sad that we lost, we were overwhelmed. Everyone came together and it was overwhelming, but so beautiful at the same time."
The sisters will go on to compete in the USA Volleyball Pair Championships in May.
Arizona's No. 1 team is not done yet, the Witt's will then head to California to play for the indoor Cal Baptist Volleyball team for one more year as a grad transfers.
"Next, we are headed to Cal Baptist University to play a year of indoor and complete our masters degrees. This summer, we're going to be training on the beach. We're going to be doing AVP events and getting ready for our indoor season, and then after, next year, we'll be back on the beach," said Witt twins.
