Arizona Looks to Bounce Back in Bracket Play

TUCSON, Ariz.– Arizona kicked off the weekend as hosts for the Big 12 Championship with a couple of hard-fought defeats. The Cats opened their day with a, 1-4, loss to #2 seed and No. 9 TCU with four matches going to four sets. Arizona faced #3 seed and No. 12 ASU in its second match of the day and came up short, 1-4, with three matches going to the third set.

Arizona will be back in action tomorrow for Day 2 of the Big 12 Championship as they face South Carolina in the first round of a single elimination bracket. The Wildcats defeated the Gamecocks earlier in the season, 3-2, at the Wildcat Spring Challenge.

Game 1 {6} No. 20 Arizona – 1, {2} No. 9 TCU – 4

Jamie Streit and Sophia Winter were first to finish up in the duel. The pair battled hard but came up short in straight-sets, 15-21, 11-21, as TCU took the 1-0 lead. Ashlyn Zilliken and Madeline Walker got the day started for Arizona. The duo dominated set 1 taking it 21-14. The pair would then drop a tight set 2, 19-21, before winning the third set, 15-12, evening up the duel at 1-1. This was Zilliken and Walker's second time this season earning a point over the Frogs.

Carlie Cisneros and Regan Holmer were next to finish up. The #1 pair took set one, 21-18, before dropping a tight second set, 19-21. Cisneros and Holmer ended up falling short in the third set, 8-15, to give TCU a 2-1 lead. Adriana Nieves and Meghan O'Meara also went three-sets after they were able to battle back after dropping set 1, 18-21, and taking set 2, 21-18. The #3 pairing would also end up coming up short dropping the third set 10-15 and giving TCU the clinching point.

Brooke Boyko and Sadie Moore finished up last in the duel after a tough three-set match. The pair came out hot, taking set 1 in dominant fashion, 21-13. The duo would then drop a tight set 2, 19-21, and go three sets. Boyko and Moore fought hard in the third set but fell short, 9-15, giving TCU the 4-1 duel win.

Game 2 {6} No. 20 Arizona – 1, {3} No. 12 Arizona State– 4

Adriana Nieves and Meghan O'Meara struck first for the Cats in the second match of the day against the Sun Devils. The pair was able to win in straight-sets 21-14, 21-18, giving Arizona the early 1-0 lead. Regan Holmer and Carlie Cisneros finished second in the duel. The #1 pair fought hard but couldn't get the job done losing in straight-sets, 16-21, 19-21, tying up the duel for ASU at 1-1.

Ashlyn Zilliken and Madeline Walker took their match three sets. The duo looked dominant in the first set, winning it 21-14. However, ASU was able to fight back as Zilliken and Walker dropped the next two sets, 14-21, 8-15. Sophia Winter and Jamie Streit played a hard-fought match. The pair picked up set one 21-19 but unfortunately dropped set two 17-21 to send the match to a third set. Streit and Winter battle hard in a tight third set but fell just short as ASU came out on top, 15-13, giving them the clinching point and 3-1 lead.

Sadie Moore and Brooke Boyko's match went the distance as well. The pair took set one, 22-20, before dropping set two, 20-22. The third set was a thriller, however ASU was able to come out on top 19-17 and give the Sun Devils a 4-1 win.
