TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats saw three players receive a number of postseason accolades on Wednesday.
Sophomore designated hitter Alfonso Rivas was named a second-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association as the DH. Rivas was also selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-West Region second-team.
Junior first baseman JJ Matijevic and junior outfielder Jared Oliva were both named to the ABCA All-West Region first-team. Matijevic was also named a third-team All-American by Perfect Game with Oliva receiving honorable mention honors from the same outlet.
Matijevic has already been named a second-team All-American by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball. By landing on the All-Region teams, Matijevic, Oliva and Rivas are now all eligible to be named All-Americans by the ABCA, which will be announced Saturday.
Rivas, who will spend the summer in the prestigious Cape Cod Summer League, batted .371 this season in 213 at-bats. He had 54 runs scored, 13 doubles, seven home runs, 63 RBI and 39 walks. He posted a conference-best .483. Rivas played in 58 of 59 games with 54 starting assignments. Rivas raised his average 124 points from his freshman to his sophomore season, and will be a staple in Arizona's lineup next season.
Matijevic, who joined Rivas and Oliva on the All-Pac-12 team, led the league in batting with a .383 batting average. He had 30 doubles, which tied a single-season school record. The left-handed hitter also had 10 home runs, 65 RBI, 57 runs scored and nine stolen bases. He has been named to three All-American teams already this postseason, with more expected. Matijevic was selected 75th overall in this week's Major League Baseball Draft by the Houston Astros.
Oliva joined Matijevic as the only players to start all 59 games for the Wildcats this season. The junior batted .321 with 25 doubles, three triples, four home runs, 54 RBI, 56 runs scored and 10 stolen bases this season. Oliva was taken in the seventh round of the draft this week by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
