EUEGNE, Ore. – It was a tightly contested first half between No. 8 Oregon (16-2, 5-0 Pac-12) and Arizona (4-12, 0-5 Pac-12), but the Ducks proved to be too much in the second half as they won their eighth-straight game by a score of 62-44 on Friday night in Matthew Knight Arena.
Â
Defense was the story for Oregon as they forced Arizona into 29% shooting and their lowest point total of the season. Sabrina Ionescu was also dominant in the game as she scored a game-high 22 points and brought down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Â
Arizona's defense has been improving as of late though as Oregon scored their second-fewest points of the season tonight. Coming into the game, Oregon averaged just under 87 points a game.
Â
Sam Thomas recorded her first Pac-12 double-double tonight as she scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Arizona's last double-double in a Pac-12 contest came on Feb. 12, 2017 against Washington State when
LaBrittney Jones had 22 points and 15 rebounds.
Â
Kat Wright had a nice night offensively as she scored 12 points with three made three-pointers. The senior transfer also brought down five rebounds.
Â
Arizona got off to a great start in the first quarter as they were up 12-5 at the first media timeout, but the Ducks would go on a 14-2 run to end the quarter, giving them a 19-14 lead at the break. Ionescu scored 12 of Oregon's 19 points and had the final nine by herself.
Â
The Wildcats played some outstanding defense in the second quarter, holding the Ducks to just eight points in the period and zero points in the final four minutes. Offensively, Arizona managed 12 points, including another buzzer beater by Thomas to make the score 27-26 Oregon heading into halftime to cap off a 7-0 run.
Â
Oregon tightened up the screws in the third quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 18-5 in the period to take a 45-31 lead into the fourth quarter. Arizona didn't score for the first seven minutes in the period and only made one basket. Oregon maintained a comfortable lead on the back of some more good defense in the fourth quarter, giving them their third-straight win over Arizona.
It'll be a quick turnaround for the Wildcats as they head to Corvallis to face No. 22 Oregon State at 2 p.m. MST on Sunday afternoon. The game will be aired on the Pac-12 Networks.
