TUCSON, ARIZ.- Aaro Pollanen, a freshman from Helsinki, Finland is looking to make his mark on the University of Arizona tennis program. In high school, Pollanen was a top-10 Finnish player and has been internationally ranked No. 158 by the ITF. ArizonaWildcats.com sat down to learn more about his goals, moving to Arizona, and more.
 
Q: How did you get into Tennis?
 
My father used to play tennis when he was younger and I have a brother who is four years older who is a senior at Ohio State. They really got me into playing. We competed a little bit as kids, but he is older so it didn't happen often.
 
Q: What is something Coach Clancy Shields has taught you this season?
 
There are so many new things in general with college tennis. It's completely different than High School. There is new scoring, a low net, and you now are playing as a team. You really have to focus on every point and you can't lose your focus during a match or you might pay for it.
 
Q: Who is your biggest role model on the team?
 
That's not easy! I don't think I can pick one. I would say obviously all of the seniors have great advice and same with all the guys that have been here longer than I have.
 
Q: Why did you decide to come to the United States for college?
 
When my brother started college I really started to think about it more, and when the time came to make a decision it was a really easy choice. It was the right decision for me. I really liked Arizona's coaching staff, teammates, and the facilities are unbelievable here. It is also so warm here in Arizona. We also get to play outdoors all year round. Back home (in Finland) we play indoors for 7 months out of the year. It's completely opposite than playing outside.
 
Q: What are your personal and team goals this season?
 
For a team we have the goal to make the NCAA Championships this year. Personally, I want to hold my position and do my job as a teammate for the other guys.
 
Q: Do you have any hidden talents?
I really like music. I like to play guitar, but I think a lot of people know that. So I guess it isn't a hidden talent. When I'm playing I like to listen to old school rock as well as go to concerts.
