Student-Athletes of the Month Named for September

Women’s Soccer, Football, Gymnastics, and Men's Track and Field are all represented in the latest edition of Student-Athletes of the Month.

TUCSON, Ariz. – Women's Soccer's Lainey Burdett, Men's Track and Field's Justice Summerset, Gymnastics' Adra Parks and Football's Branden Leon have been honored as the student-athletes of the month for September.

These students have been honored for their commitment to earning their undergraduate degree, the ability to maximize their academic potential, and their dedication to academic improvement and growth.

These students have been chosen by the C.A.T.S Academic staff.

Burdett, a senior from Las Vegas, is majoring in Marketing through the Eller College of Management. Last season, Burdett was named All-Pac-12 Second-Team and had a 0.81 goals against average and ended the 2017 season with a total of seven shutouts, which is the third best in Arizona goalkeeper history. Burdett is 8-4-1 with five shutouts this season as a senior.

"Lainey Burdett truly embodies what it means to be a leader. Not only does she exemplify this quality on the soccer field, but Lainey, a senior, displays her skills in the classroom as well," academic counselor LeAnne Shoemaker said. "Coming into college a semester early, Lainey was accepted into the Eller College of Management her junior year and is now a marketing major. In addition to being a great student, Lainey is making history on the field."

Summerset, a social, behavioral, and human understanding major, continues to prep for his junior season. Last season, as a sophomore, Summerset earned his personal best marks for the Outdoor High Jump with a 7-2.25 (2.19m) and was honored as First Team Outdoor All-American.

"Justice Summerset immediately brightens any room he walks into. He is such a joy to work with and academically, is one of the most improved students that I have seen," Shoemaker said. "As a junior, Justice has become a leader on the track and exemplifies this quality in every aspect of his life."

Parks is a sophomore from West Des Moines, Iowa, majoring in criminal justice studies. Parks earned a career high score of 9.825 during her collegiate debut in floor at Cal last season and finished with a career high of 9.775 on vault at the 2018 Pac-12 Championships for the gymnastics squad.

"Adra Parks is off to a great fall semester. She has put forth extra effort and has been doing extra work on her own, and coming to her appointments. She is really motivated," learning specialist Michelle Galambos and academic counselor Sarah Howard said.

Leon is a redshirt junior out of Goodyear. He played in all 13 games last season as a reserve running back and special teams contributor where he averaged 6.2 yards per carry, gaining 81 yards on 13 carries with one touchdown.

"Branden Leon is a student-athlete who is reliable, independent and always strives to do well in the classroom," academic counselor Andy Salgado said. "He is pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice Studies with a minor in Leadership Studies and is on track to graduate in May 2019."
