Sumlin, Wildcats Sign 20 to National Letters of Intent

TUCSON, Ariz. – Head coach Kevin Sumlin and the Arizona football program are excited to announce the official signing of 20 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to join the program in 2019.

In the 11 months since taking the head coaching job, Sumlin and his staff have worked tirelessly to assemble their first recruiting class. The 20-player class proved Sumlin and his staff are willing and able to recruit coast to coast – and, when necessary, beyond.  Additionally, an emphasis was made to add size and depth of talent to the offensive and defensive lines, where the Wildcats signed four to each side of the ball.

Two players signed from Florida with four from from California. In between, the staff made a big statement in Texas, hauling in eight key prospects headlined by quarterback Grant Gunnell, the state's most prolific prep passer. Two hail from home turf in Arizona, while one apiece signed from Nevada, Utah and American Samoa.

Along the offensive line, the Wildcats signed two top junior college prospects, including Josh Donovan from Trinity Community College and Paiton Fears from Hutchinson Community College. Donovan stands at 6-feet 6-inches and 310 pounds, while Fears is 6-foot-6 and 320 pounds. Joining the junior college transfers are Jordan Morgan from nearby Marana High School and Jamari Williams from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Sunrise, Fla. Morgan is listed at 6-foot-5 and 270 pounds, and Williams reports at 6-foot-3, 310 pounds.

Defensively, two junior college signees will also bulk up Arizona's line. Trevon Mason from Navarro Community College is 6-foot-5, 280 pounds and Myles Tapusoa from Eastern Arizona Community College is 6-foot-2, 326 pounds. Joining the transfers inside is high school talent Kane Bradford, a 6-foot-5, 270-pounder from Dallas, Texas. Rounding out the class is defensive end Kwabena Watson, a 6-foot-2, 225-pounder.

The Wildcats also put a premium adding depth and play-making ability in the secondary, inking four student-athletes. Included are Maurice Gaines from Oakland, Calif., Chris Roland from Palmdale, Calif., Jaxen Turner from Perris, Calif., and Bobby Wolfe, from Houston, Texas.

Two linebackers round out the defensive side of the ball. Eddie Siaumau from American Samoa is a rangy player and will be joined by the athletic Derrion Clark of Dallas, Texas.

Offensively, Arizona welcomes three receivers headlined by Gunnell's high school teammate Boobie Curry. The Houston prospect will join Jalen Johnson from Eastvale, Calif., and Las Vegas, Nev., native Jaden Mitchell.

In the backfield, Michael Wiley is the lone running back signee. The Houston native prepped at the Strake Jesuit College Preparatory.

On special teams, Phoenix standout punter Kyle Ostenthorp signed his Letter of Intent giving Arizona much needed help at a position it graduated its top players in 2018.
