Running Back Taylor Named First Team All-Pac-12

TUCSON, Ariz. – One of the nation's top all-purpose performers, sophomore running back J.J. Taylor was named a First Team All-Pac-12 honoree on Tuesday. Taylor was among five Wildcats earning All-Conference recognition, joining honorable mention selections PJ Johnson, Shawn Poindexter, Thomas Reid III and Colin Schooler.

The 5-foot-6, 184-pound Taylor is the first Wildcat to earn First Team All-Pac-12 honors since linebacker Scooby Wright III in 2014. The last offensive player to earn first team accolades was running back Ka'Deem Carey, who did so in consecutive seasons from 2012-13.

A native of Corona, Calif., Taylor ranks sixth nationally and second in the Pac-12 with 1,434 rushing yards this season. He also gained 133 receiving yards and 540 kick return yards for a total of 2,107 all-purpose yards, the second-most among FBS players.

Taylor's sensational sophomore season was one of the best in program history. His 1,434 yards on the ground are fourth-most in single-season history, while his 2,107 all-purpose yards are also fourth-most. His 284 yards in the Sept. 22 win at Oregon State were fourth-most in UA history, including the most ever in a road game for a Wildcat running back. Taylor scored six rushing touchdowns and added an 84-yard kickoff return score on the season.

Earning honorable mention honors in his first season with the program was Johnson, a junior defensive lineman. The Sacramento, Calif., native played in 10 games and started nine teams. A consistently disruptive force, Johnson totaled 31 tackles, including 8.5 tackles-for-loss, which ranked second on the team. He registered 3.0 sacks, forced a fumbled, recovered two fumbles, broke up a pass and recorded one safety.

Perhaps no player for the Wildcats improved their productivity more from 2017 to 2018 than Poindexter, a senior receiver. The Peoria, Ariz., native caught 42 passes for a team-high 759 yards, while tying the school single-season record with 11 receiving touchdowns. In the final half of the year, Poindexter had a streak of four games catching two touchdown passes in each contest, and at one time has a streak of six-straight receptions going for a touchdown, something not done in the Pac-12 in at least a decade.

Receiving a coach's nod as an honorable selection was Reid III, a noted special teams standout and regular in Arizona's receiving rotation. The redshirt sophomore from Chesapeake Bay, Va., was starter on multiple special teams units, totaling three tackles, including one for loss on a botched punt attempt by Oregon State on Sept. 22. Reid III hauled in one pass for six yards, while playing in all 12 contests.

Arizona's final All-Conference honoree is Schooler, one of the top defenders in the league. The sophomore linebacker led the team and ranks fifth in the Pac-12 with 119 tackles. More impressively, Schooler racked up 21.5 tackles-for-loss, second-most in the Pac-12 this season and fifth-most in UA single-season history. Additionally, Schooler tied for the team-high with 3.5 sacks and intercepted two passes returned for a total of 83 yards. He had four pass breakups, one forced fumble, one recovery and one safety.
