Freshman
Brooks Fail has made waves in the pool in his first season as a Wildcat. The Tucson native has the fastest time on the team in the 500 and 1,000 free. He has won the 500 free three times this season, and the 1,000 free four. In his short collegiate career thus far, the freestyler has already written his name in Arizona school history, holding the ninth-fastest 500 free time.
The aspiring teacher explains he got into swimming through a summer league here in Tucson, "I started on a team with the country club as a summer activity, and quickly fell in love. I was doing very well and it is different than all other sports. In swimming, you get a nice balance of the individual and the team. I started swimming year-round when I was 10 and have never looked back."
The Catalina Foothills product chose Arizona "because [he] has always rooted for the Wildcats." Fail further adds, "U of A is my dream school and I am so lucky to be able to represent my hometown team. Arizona was definitely the right choice."
Transitioning to college has been very smooth for Fail, as he explains, "being close to home definitely has its perks. If I ever need anything, my parents are right there. They have helped me transition into college and I would not be here without them." The 6-5 freshman also attributes the smooth move to his teammates, "having my team to rely on really helped me make new friends and get used to college."
Fail notes his first season on the Arizona swim team has "been really good. I've tried so many new things since being on the team. In particular, we run up the stadium seats as part of training, which is something I never thought to do or would be able to do. Growing up in Tucson, I trained at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center with my club team, so I am used to the pool. However, the training is very different and I have grown so much."
As the team heads into Pac-12 and NCAA Championships, Fail is excited to see what he can do, "but more so about the team. We have all put in so much work, and it will be very rewarding to see everyone complete their goals and accomplish everything they set their mind to. We have a lot of seniors this year, so it will be exciting to see them swim through their last meet and experience all of the emotion of championships."
In addition to swimming, Fail is a huge soccer fan. He notes, "soccer is my favorite sport to watch. I might go to Los Angeles over the summer to root on the LA Galaxy before getting back into training for next season."
Fail is excited for championships and is looking forward to his next three seasons at Arizona.
