Arizona in Third at N.I.T after Play is Suspended Due to Darkness

TUCSON, Ariz.– After a strong team performance, the Arizona men's golf team finished the first day of the N.I.T in third place, scoring 279 (-25). Freshman Trevor Werbylo and senior George Cunningham were driving forces for the Cats, where they both go into the second day of the tournament in the top ten.

Leading the N.I.T is UNLV, who is 25 under par, with Arizona State staying close behind at 12 under. In the individual portion of the tournament. Iowa State follows Arizona in fourth place, nine under, and Colorado State closes out the top five at six under par. In the individual competition, Shitaro Ban is in first at 12 under, with Chun An Yu following closely behind, 11 under par.

"We have a great round going and it's exciting to see our team continue building confidence," commented head coach Jim Anderson. " We will be prepared for Round 3 and look forward to continue shooting great scores. To shoot the scores we are getting as a group takes a whole team. We are getting production from our entire squad."

Werbylo had a standout performance, highlighted by a double eagle in the second round. The freshman is tied for third, and is currently nine under par on the day. Werbylo finished the round ranked in the top five in par 3, par 4, and par 5 scoring with nine birdies total. Werbylo's double eagle was the sole of the tournament and the first for the Cats this season.

"It was a great day," said Werbylo. "It didn't start off great, I was +3 through 8 holes but then turned it around and gained more confidence as the day went on."

Cunningham will enter round 3 with a score of 129 (-4) placing him in a tie for sixth going into the final day of competition. The Tucson native had his second lowest round of the season at 68, only second to his round of 65 at the John Burns Intercollegiate where he placed second overall. Cunningham totaled nine birdies through 34 holes and ranked in the top three in par 3 and par 5 scoring.

Sophomores Brad Reeves and David Laskin both finished the day tied in 23^rd. Reeves has now made par scoring or better in 8 rounds in a tournament, with a round one score of 69. Laskin had 7 birdies on the day and averaged 2.57 on par 3 scoring. Junior Travis Fredborg finishes the day with a score of 146 (+9) and tied in 83^rd place.

In the individual category for Arizona: freshman Tianlang Guan is tied in 16^th (-5), sophomore Briggs Duce and junior Dylan Stein are tied in 29^th (-2), freshman Gavin Cohen sits in a tied in 35^th, senior Toppie Hogan is tied in 61^st, freshman Drake Mendenhall is tied in 78^th, and Austin Stadeli is tied in 90^th.

The tournament will continue tomorrow, with the remainder of the second round being played starting at 8:30 and the final round beginning right after its conclusion.
