
Arizona Finishes N.I.T in Third

TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona Men's Golf team finished the N.I.T in third place for their fourth top five finish of the season. The final score of 830 was the lowest tournament score for the Cats this year, going 34 under par. The Cats had two top ten finishes in George Cunningham, who tied for 7th (205, -11), and Trevor Werbylo, who finished in a tie for 9th place (206, -10).
"We have a very good team and I couldn't be more proud of how we have started the spring," said head coach Jim Anderson. "We have an appetite to improve and we certainly can remain humble understanding the areas we can improve. That said, to shoot 34 under par as a team was outstanding. We have much to look forward to look forward to and seeing the confidence build up will be great moving towards the next event."
The UNLV Rebels won the N.I.T title after shooting 50 under par as a team, and Shintaro Ban, of UNLV, took first in the individual competition, with a score of 200 (-16). Arizona State came in second at 822 (-42), and North Texas (836, -28) and Iowa State (840, -2) round out the top five.
Cunningham had his fourth top ten finish of the year, going eleven under on the tournament. Cunningham went under par in all three rounds and now has 11 rounds at even par or better this season. The Tucson native had 13 birdies and one eagle on the tournament. Cunningham finished the N.I.T ranked third in all pars scored, and in the top five in par 3, 4, and 5 scoring.
"Today was a good day for us as a team!," commented Cunningham. "We didn't win but we finished at 34 under par which is unbelievable that we are able to shoot that far under! We are looking really good for the rest of our spring semester and hopefully will continue this good play and get one or two more wins!"
Werbylo had his best finish in his young career, besting his career 18-hole score (66) and 54-hole score (208). The freshman's performance was highlighted by going six under on par five hole 10, with a double eagle in round two and an eagle in the final round. Werbylo ranked second in par 5 scoring, going eleven under and averaging 4.08.
Sophomore Brad Reeves finished the tournament tied in 12th, with a score of 208, tying his career low 54-hole score from the St. Mary's Invitational. Reeves ranked in the top three in par 4 scoring, averaging 3.87. He also totaled 13 birdies overall.
Sophomore David Laskin finished tied in 20th at five under par. He had 11 birdies and one eagle. Junior Travis Fredborg finished in 85th, scoring 229 (+13).
From the individual competitiors for Arizona, freshman Tianlang Guan finished tied in 20th and Dylan Stein tied for 28th. Sophomore Briggs Duce and freshman Gavin Cohen both tied in 28th, Drake Mendenhall finished the tournamnent tied in 66th, Toppie Hogan ended in 80th, and Austin Stadeli in 91st.
The Cats will travel to San Diego, Calif. to compete in the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic on March 12th-13th.
