Track and Field Arizona Athletics

In the Blocks with David and Daniel Egbo

Arizona juniors Daniel Egbo and David Egbo bring a whole new perspective to Arizona's track and field's family dynamic. The twins, lifelong roommates, and teammates bring with them a genuine bond to Roy P. Drachman Stadium.

"To compete for Arizona, for me it's a blessing because I'm doing what I love and it's for the school," said Daniel. "I'm able to give my school a better reputation by competing, doing my best, and living through track."

Daniel added; "It's an opportunity for me and a chance to represent. We've had the Wildcat way instilled in us, so it's a good way to represent and put on for our families, friends, and teammates."

The Wildcat Way Program of Excellence has been developed to align with the mission of the athletics department, the holistic development of student-athletes. The Wildcat Way is a way of thinking, of doing, and of living and defines what it means to represent the `A'.

"Academically, we're always on each other," said David. "Coaches get on us, counselors get on us, but we know what we have to do. Especially in our house, we're always like, 'hey, did you finish your assignment? Do you need help with something? Do you need me to leave so you can focus?' Questions like that. Athletically for me, especially with Isaac (Hing), I've always been chasing Isaac (Hing). And to have kids that come in below me; Zakee (Washington), Darnell (Sayles), Chris (Rollins)  chasing me on both sides, so I have to do something, and it's pushing me to be better."

When it comes to competition on the track, the Egbo brothers take the competition a little more personally.

"We're twins and we love each other, but neither wants to lose to the other, especially in our respective events, especially in the 400," said David. "Sometimes I race him (Daniel), and he won't let me win no matter what, so it's always a competition between us."

Daniel added; "It's great having that blood relative on your team. Obviously, your teammates are like family to you, but there are some things that are harder for you to talk to them about compared to your blood relative. If I am having trouble with something that I don't want to go to my teammates or coaches for, I'll go to David about it and he's right there, literally a room down the hall from me."

While the Egbos share blood, the Arizona track and field team has become their family and the coaches have pushed them to produce the best version of themselves on and off the track.

"It's a big family," said David. "Whether it's coach (T.J.) Crater coming to bug us when we're doing our drills, coach (Francesca) Green, she knows what she wants, and if you don't produce, then you know when she's disappointed in you. You know what you have to do. She's not going to baby you. She's going to make sure you get it done. Coach Harvey, I've never run for him personally, but as a coach, he always makes sure to be there watching us, cheering us on. My freshman year, I was running a race, and the only person I heard was Coach Harvey yelling at me. It instilled in me to do a little bit better than what I was doing, so it's cool to know that even though he's not in our specific group, he's there for us."

"They're the kind of coaches you don't want to let down" said Daniel. "They are the kind of people that make you want to run your best to make them proud knowing I can run this race for me, but also, you want to make them proud and thank them for taking this chance on me and allowing me to run for you."

Going forward, the pair are looking to make their impact as upperclassmen felt on the track.

"This year, sprinting needs to make some noise, said David. "We're trying to score us some points at the Pac-12 Championships, get as many of us to regionals and nationals as possible, and get Arizona out there. We're upperclassmen now, so I'm not trying to lose. Losing is not fun. I don't want any regrets at the end of the season. We just want to give all we can."

Daniel added; "Last year and freshman year, I had a lot of regrets at the end of my seasons. I know I should have given more. Personally, I feel that our 4x4, it's always a goal to go to nationals, whether it's indoor or outdoor. That goal is still on the table and it's going to be on the table for a while This year, we're going to do a lot of great things in the 4x4 and sprints."

Up next, the Egbo brothers will compete in the Red Raider Classic on Friday, Feb. 9-10.
