Lawyer Named Big 12 Men’s Outdoor Performer of the Year

TUCSON, Ariz. – Mason Lawyer has been named the Big 12 Men's Outdoor Performer of the Year following a historic performance at the 2026 Big 12 Outdoor Championships, the conference announced Thursday.

Lawyer also earned Big 12 Men's High Point Performer of the Meet honors after totaling 28 points across the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay to help lead Arizona to a runner-up finish at the conference championships hosted at Drachman Stadium.

The senior delivered one of the top sprint performances in the nation during the championship meet, sweeping the men's 100m and 200m titles. Lawyer won the 100m in a wind-aided 9.93, the fastest all-conditions mark in Big 12 history and the fastest time ever run by a Wildcat in the event.

He followed with a historic performance in the 200m, clocking a school-record, facility-record, and Big 12-record time of 20.02 to claim his second conference title of the weekend. The mark ranks No. 4 in the NCAA and among the top-20 times in the world this season.

Lawyer became the first Arizona athlete since Michael Bates in 1991 to sweep the conference outdoor 100m and 200m titles.

In addition to his individual titles, Lawyer helped Arizona's 4x100m relay team break the school record with a time of 38.62 while earning runner-up honors. The relay group currently ranks No. 8 nationally.

Lawyer currently ranks No. 5 in the NCAA in the 100m and No. 4 nationally in the 200m entering postseason competition.

The Big 12 Performer of the Year award marks the first outdoor end-of-season conference honor for Arizona since joining the Big 12.

"It's huge that I was able to get this accomplishment," Lawyer said. "It's nice having an actual conference to compete in and being able to calculate where I stack up throughout the year. I put in all this hard work, so it's great that it doesn't go unnoticed. To be at the top of a powerful conference like the Big 12 is huge. It shows that I've got it going into nationals and that I'm able to compete at a high level. Hopefully this helps me continue building toward my last couple meets and eventually into the post-collegiate world."

Behind Lawyer's performances, Arizona's men finished second at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships with 101 points, the program's highest conference finish since 2011 and most conference championship points scored since 2006.

Arizona will next compete at the NCAA West First Round beginning May 27 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
