Lubbock, Texas. – The University of Arizona track and field program competed in the opening day of the Texas Tech Shootout and the Washington Husky Classic on Friday, Feb 9th.
 
"It was a real exciting day out here in day one of the Texas Tech Shootout," said head track and field coach Fred Harvey. "Starting off with the 600s, Karolina (Pahlitzsch)  and Diana (Gajda) set the No. 1 and No. 2 collegiate times, got to be happy about that. Cal Westway was right off his PR; 1:20 is really exciting for him and what he was able to do there. The young men in the 400-meter ran great. Zakee (Washington) should have an indoor PR for him. For Maj (Williams), that definitely was an indoor and outdoor PR. Tatum Waggoner definitely ran an indoor PR, and looked great in a really fast race. I am really happy for Brena (Andrews), made the finals and ran a 7.45 in the 60. For me, I'm a little biased; hometown young lady Alyssa Thompson had a big PR in the pentathlon today. We set ourselves up really well for tomorrow; we should have some more great performances and looking forward to another great Wildcat day tomorrow.
 
Alyssa Thompson set a PR in the pentathlon, scoring 4,001 points. Thompson set her PR in the long jump after clearing 6.11m.
 
Karolina Pahlitzsch clocked a time of 1:29.23 in the 600-meter run to set a new PR, No. 1 NCAA mark, and the No. 10 mark in the world. Diana Gajda clocked a time of 1:29.75 to set a new PR, No. 2 NCAA mark, and the No. 13 mark in the world. April Sutton clocked a time of 1:35.34 to set a PR in the 600-meter run.
 
Brena Andrews set a PR in the opening round of the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.48 to qualify for the finals. Andrews went on to set a new PR after taking third in the 60-meter dash finals with a time of 7.45.
