Box Score TUCSON, Ariz. -- No. 9 Arizona put the finishing touches on a perfect weekend at the Wildcat Invitational with a 9-1, five-inning victory over No. 24 USC Upstate. Arizona went a perfect 6-0 in the tournament to improve to 10-0 at home this year and 21-2 on the season.
UA's offense, which had a season-high 15 hits vs. Wisconsin yesterday, remained hot, putting up nine runs on 12 hits in the contest.
Arizona's underclassmen stood out in the contest. Freshmen and sophomores accounted for 11 of UA's 12 hits and eight of the nine RBI while freshman
Hanah Bowen was dominant in the circle, limiting the potent Spartan lineup to one run on four hits. Bowen struck out seven and walked one in the victory. She improved to 4-1 on the year.
The Cats hit two home runs in the game; first-inning blasts from
Jessie Harper and
Dejah Mulipola set the tone for UA.Â
Harper,
Reyna Carranco and
Malia Martinez finished with two hits in the contest. Martinez's two knocks extended her career-long hitting streak to 10 games.
Ansley Gilstrap led off the game with a home run to give the Spartans an early lead.
The first three Wildcats recorded hits in the first, punctuated by Harper's eighth home run, a two-run blast to left, to put the Cats up 3-1. The homer followed an RBI double from
Reyna Carranco. Two batters later,
Dejah Mulipola homered to put the Cats up 4-1.
UA added to its lead in the third.
Aleah Craighton walked with one out and took second on a fly ball to right. The extra base would prove critical as she scored on a two-out single from
Malia Martinez to put the Cats up 5-1 after three innings.
Carranco and Craighton added RBI in the fourth to put the Cats up 7-1.
Ivy Davis roped a pinch-hit walkoff double to left to plate two and end the game.
Up next:Â Arizona hosts Minnesota on Wednesday, March 14 at 6 p.m. to wrap up the nonconference portion of the schedule.
