TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats completed a three-game sweep of Nicholls State on Saturday afternoon, topping the Colonels 9-3 in front of 2,261 fans at Hi Corbett Field.
Â
The Wildcats improved to 16-10 on the season and have won six of their last seven games. Nicholls dropped to 9-18 on the year.
Â
For the second straight game, Nicholls jumped out in front and grabbed a 1-0 lead. The Colonels got on the board when left fielder Lee Clark hit a sacrifice fly to right for the first run of the game.
Â
But Arizona wasted no time responding, scoring one in the first and then having a five-run inning in the second. The Wildcats got their first run when third-place hitter Alfonso Rivas doubled to center to score
Cal Stevenson, who reached earlier in the inning on a bunt single.
Â
An inning later, with the score deadlocked at one, Arizona opened up the game with a five-run inning. Freshman designated hitter
Tate Soderstrom started the inning with a double to put a man into scoring position for fellow freshman
Donta Williams. Williams unloaded on a pitch from starter Cayden Hatcher for a two-run home run off the Terry Francona Hitting Center in right for his first home run and RBI of his career. Williams' blast made it 3-1.
Â
Matt Fraizer doubled one batter later and then moved to third on a groundout from
Jacob Blas. Stevenson singled through the right side in his second at-bat to score Fraizer and make it 4-1. After
Cameron Cannon was hit by a pitch, Rivas singled home Stevenson. The final run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly to center from
Nick Quintana to score Cannon and make it 6-1 and give starting pitcher
Michael Flynn plenty of cushion.
Â
The Colonels got one run back in the third, but Arizona again extended the lead with three runs in the fourth. With one out, Rivas and
Cesar Salazar produced back-to-back hits to put two on with one out for Quintana. Quintana homered to left field for a three-run shot to make it 9-2. The sophomore third baseman has three home runs in his last four games after not having any in his first 22 games of the season.
Â
With Williams and Quintana going deep, Arizona had five home runs over the final two games of the series after entering the series with four home runs as a team.
Â
Flynn gave up another run in the fifth, but got through the inning to earn the win. He went five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, while striking out four. He improved to 4-1 on the year and as is the first Arizona pitcher to reach four victories on the season.
Preston Price,
Zach Sherman and
Tylor Megill pitched four hitless innings in relief of Flynn to lock down the game.
Â
Salazar had a pair of base hits to raise his average to .382 and he has now reached base in 24 straight games this season. Rivas finished 4 for 5 with two RBI and a run scored. Fraizer finished 3 for 4 with a run scored and Williams was 2 for 4 with two RBI and one run scored. Stevenson also had a two-hit game, going 2 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Â
Arizona returns to action Monday night at New Mexico in a single midweek affair. First pitch from Albuquerque is set for 5:30 p.m. The Wildcats will then return home to host No. 1 Oregon State for a three-game series beginning Friday night.
