Aguilera Dominates in Midweek Win over BYU

TUCSON, Ariz. – Juan Aguilera tossed seven shutout innings to earn his fifth win of the season, lifting the Arizona Wildcats to a 6-1 victory over BYU on Tuesday at Hi Corbett Field.

Aguilera moved to 5-0 on the season, tossing a career-high seven innings, and doing it in dominant fashion. The senior from Sierra Vista allowed just two hits and one walk, while striking out two. He faced just two batters over the minimum and was efficient over his seven innings, needing just 86 pitches. He lowered his season ERA to 1.17.

The win improved Arizona to 23-12 on the season, and dropped BYU to 18-16. The Wildcats have now won 11 of their last 13 games, and have allowed two runs or fewer in four of their last five games. Arizona also moved to 17-2 at Hi Corbett Field on the season.

Facing BYU's number one starter, Jordan Wood, the Wildcats wasted no time getting to the right-hander. With one out, Cameron Cannon reached on an error and Alfonso Rivas followed with a walk to put two men on. After a pop out, catcher Cesar Salazar roped a double to left-center to score Cannon. Rivas would have scored as well, but the ball bounced over the line after a hop, making it a ground-rule double, and keeping Rivas at third base.

Aguilera breezed through the next two innings, facing the minimum, before the Wildcats got him another run in the third. Cannon reached with one out again, this time via a single to put a man on for Rivas. Rivas went the opposite way and doubled down the left field line to plate Cannon and make it 2-0 in favor of the Wildcats.

Aguilera allowed a leadoff infield single to start the fourth, but got second-place hitter Daniel Schneemann to hit into a double play to erase the leadoff man. He retired the next batter to get the Wildcats back to the plate.

In the bottom half, the Cats had a four-run inning to give Aguilera even a bigger cushion to work with. Freshman designated hitter Tate Soderstrom led the inning off with a double. Ryan Haug followed with a walk, before Donta Williams was hit by a pitch to load the bases for shortstop Jacob Blas.

Blas attacked the first pitch and singled up the middle to score Soderstrom and Haug. Blas was able to move up to second, thanks to an error by centerfielder Jarrett Perns, which put runners on second and third.  Matt Fraizer then singled up the middle as well on a 0-2 pitch to plate Williams and Haug and make it 6-0 Wildcats.

The Cougars got their lone run of the game in the eighth inning on an RBI single from second baseman Brennon Anderson in the eighth inning. But Zach Sherman entered in the ninth to close it out, working around a two-out single to lock down Arizona's 23rd win of the season.

Fraizer finished 2 for 4 with two RBI for his second-straight two-hit game. He has three multiple-hit games in his last five. Blas also had a two-hit night, going 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored. Soderstrom had his second career multi-hit game, going 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Arizona will now return to action Friday when the Wildcats open a three-game series with No. 2 Stanford. Game one is set for 7 p.m., and will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
