TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats baseball program will celebrate the life and career of legendary coach Jerry Kindall on Saturday, before Arizona takes on No. 2 Stanford at 7 p.m. Several members of Kindall's family will be in attendance, and they will be joined on the field for a pregame ceremony by past Arizona Baseball luminaries.
Former head coaches Andy Lopez and Jerry Stitt will join current coach
Jay Johnson and Kindall's associate head coach, Jim Wing, on the field pregame. Kindall's grandson, Eric, will throw out the first pitch. Wayne Kindall, Coach Kindall's brother, will sing the national anthem prior to the game. A video will also be played on the scoreboard, reflecting on Kindall's historic career at Arizona. Kindall's family will make their way to the field at 6:40 p.m. The ceremony is slated to begin at 6:48 p.m.
The Wildcats have been honoring Kindall all season long in a variety of ways after the three-time National Champion coach passed away in late December. The Wildcats are wearing JK stickers on their helmets, and "9" patches on their jerseys. Kindall's No. 9 is also being displayed all season in right-centerfield at Hi Corbett Field, and the coach's season ticket seat has been painted red with the number nine on it to memorialize his seat.
Kindall spent 24 years as the head coach at Arizona (1973-96). He guided the Wildcats to three National Championships, including UA's first-ever team championship in any sport in 1976, and he holds the all-time wins record with an 860-579-7 coaching mark in Tucson. Kindall was the first person to ever win a College World Series title as both a player and a head coach. He was a member of Minnesota's 1956 College World Series team that defeated Arizona for the National Championship.
