Arizona Falls to UCF in 13-Inning Heartbreaker

ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Arizona baseball team fell to UCF Sunday 3-2 in 13 innings, dropping a heartbreaker to the Knights to wrap up the weekend series.

The Wildcats (9-18, 2-7) totaled three hits and three walks, while UCF (18-8, 8-1) recorded eight hits and walked twice.

Arizona received a dominant effort on the mound but couldn't capitalize offensively in key moments. Collin McKinney was charged with the loss, while Max Murray earned the victory for UCF.

Luc Fladda turned in an exceptional start for the Wildcats, tossing 7.2 innings and allowing just two runs on five hits. Garrett Hicks followed with a superb relief outing, as the senior threw 4.1 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three.

Offensively, Tony Lira, Beau Sylvester, and Jackson Forbes recorded a hit apiece, while Forbes and Sylvester scored Arizona's two runs.

UCF took an early lead, hitting a solo home run in the first to take a 1-0 advantage. The two teams remained scoreless until the eighth, as Fladda dueled with UCF starter Camden Wicker.

Arizona broke through in the eighth, as Sylvester led off with a double to open the inning. Forbes then singled through the right side to push Sylvester to third. After a strikeout, Roman Meyers pinch hit and drew a walk to load the bases. Mathis Meurant stepped up and hit a sacrifice fly to score Sylvester and tie the game. After a double steal moved both runners into scoring position, Forbes came home on a wild pitch to give Arizona its first lead.

UCF responded in the bottom half of the frame by scoring a run to tie the game once again at two runs apiece.

Hicks shut down the UCF offense, and Arizona was able to get runners in scoring position in the top of the 12th and 13th; but, they were unable to push a run across the plate.

UCF hit a one-out double in the bottom of the 13th and then had a walk-off single with two outs to secure the 3-2 victory.

Arizona will return home to host West Virginia at Hi Corbett Field on Tuesday at 6 p.m. (MST).
