Cunningham Finishes Tied in Second at Pac-12 Championships

ROLLING HILLS, Calif. – The final round of the Pac-12 Championships at the Rolling Hills Country Club concluded with the Arizona Men's Golf team placing eighth, with a score of 1,422 ( +2).  Senior George Cunningham finished tied second place matching the highest a Wildcat has finished since Jordan Gumberg finished second in 2016.

"We had another up and down day with our round," commented head coach Jim Anderson. "The guys got off to a great start and then we slowly gave a few back in the middle of the round. The course was set up challenging, and I believe we can do a better job of executing as we have done much of the spring. George was exceptional and we are so happy and proud of his continued success. We will feed off his good play and hopefully, the experience our five underclassmen picked up this week will serve us well the remainder of this year and down the road. We need to putt better and find our pace on the quick greens that are presented in the postseason."

Cunningham concludes his regular season with a fourth top five finish, with a score of 272, 12-under par. The senior placed third in the 2014 Pac-12 Championships, his previous best finish in the Championships. The senior stayed within the top three in all four rounds, and now has 23 rounds at even or under par on the season. Cunningham had 17 birdies throughout the competition, the fourth most in the field. He also ranked in the top four in par 3, par 4, and par 5 scoring, as well as in total par scoring.

"This whole week was great," said Cunningham. "I played well everyday and had a great week.  I would have like to have had the win but Justin (Suh, USC) just out played the competition! I was glad to have finished out my last PAC 12 championship with a great finish."

Freshman Gavin Cohen finished the tournament in a tie for 34th carding a 285, at one over par. The Tucson local had two rounds under par, and had a new 18-hole low score of 71. Freshmen Tianlang Guan placed tied for 39th, with a 68 in the first round, besting his previous 18-hole low score of 69. Sophomore Brad Reeves scored 289 (+5) and finished tied in 48th. Freshmen Trevor Werbylo carded a 291 (+7) to finish in a tied for 55th. Junior David Laskin finished in a tie for 69th, with a score of 301 (+17).

Justin Suh, the junior from USC, won the individual title at 16 under par while helping propel the Trojans to the overall team title at 1,389 (-31).

Selections for NCAA Regionals will be May 2nd , at 2:30 p.m, where the Arizona men's golf team hopes to advance to a regional to its first regional since the 2012-2013 season. The last appearance from a Wildcat in a regional was in 2015 by George Cunningham.
