PROVO, Utah –
Matt Fraizer hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the eighth inning Monday night, and the Arizona Wildcats topped Utah Valley 7-6 at Miller Park on the campus of BYU after trailing by five runs.
The Wildcats trailed 5-2 going into the eighth inning when magic struck.
Cesar Salazar started the rally when he doubled down the right field line.
Ryan Haug followed with a double of his own to score Salazar and cut the deficit to 5-3. After a Utah Valley pitching change, freshman designated hitter
Tate Soderstrom lined a single to center to plate Haug and make it 5-4.
Nick Quintana then singled on a 1-1 pitch to move Soderstrom to third. Quintana advanced to second on the throw. Fraizer then came up and attacked the first pitch he saw and homered to right field for his first career home run. The long ball put Arizona up 7-5 and gave the Cats their first lead of the game.
Junior left-hander
Avery Weems came on in the eighth with a runner on first and no outs, and struck out a pair and got a ground out to get the Cats back in the dugout. Arizona went in order in the top of the ninth and Weems came back out for the bottom half.
The lefty walked the leadoff man, who eventually came around to score on an RBI groundout. But Weems got ninth-place hitter Jake Berry to ground out to Quintana at second to end the game and earn his first save of the season.
Freshman left-hander
Josh Haley earned his first career win, tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings. The victory lifted Arizona to 25-17 on the season and dropped Utah Valley to 14-28.
The game was originally scheduled to be played at Utah Valley, but was moved to BYU on Monday afternoon after the field in Orem was deemed unplayable after an overnight and morning downpour.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the Wildcats when they scored five runs in the third inning. Utah Valley used two infield singles and two errors to their advantage and knocked out Arizona starter
Tylor Megill.
Zach Stone eventually came on and got the final two outs of the inning to get Arizona out of any further damage with Utah Valley leaving the bases loaded.
Stone tossed zeroes on the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth, before Arizona got on the board in the sixth. Alfonso Rivas started the inning with a triple and scored two batters later when Haug brought him home on a sacrifice fly.
Stone and Haley again held Utah Valley scoreless in the sixth. The Wolverines loaded the bases with one out, but Haley got a strikeout and a groundout to get out of the inning. The Cats then added another in the seventh when Rivas brought Quintana home on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.
Haley worked around a one-out single in the seventh to post another scoreless frame and set up Arizona's comeback in the eighth.
Fraizer, who had a four-hit game Sunday in the series finale at Utah, went 2 for 3 with a run scored and three RBI. Rivas also had a multi-hit game, going 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Stone didn't factor into the decision, but tossed three scoreless frames for the Wildcats, striking out four.
The Cats return to action Thursday back at Hi Corbett Field when they welcome UCLA in for a three-game series. First pitch Thursday is set for 6 p.m., and will be televised by Pac-12 Network.
