Arizona Set to Compete in Western Intercollegiate
04/05/2018 | Men's Golf
TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona men's golf team will travel to Santa Cruz, Calif. to compete in the 72nd Western Intercollegiate, held at the Pasatiempo Golf Club. The tournament is set to begin Saturday, April 7th with an 8:30 shotgun start, and end on Sunday, April 8th. Rounds one and two will be played on Saturday, and the final 18 holes will be on Sunday.
"Pasatiempo is an all-time favorite for our team," said head coach Jim Anderson. " I think we have played well in the past in part because the course is so much fun and also because we pair with a teammate during the competition rounds. Our players spend much of the year telling great stories about shots and putts around the very fast, undulating greens. Plus, because we have a selfless team, the opportunity to play alongside a teammate gives us even more motivation. The same golf course architect who did Augusta National, Alister Mackenzie, designed Pasatiempo Golf Club, so it's fitting to play here on this week. Our team is very excited to compete in this prestigious event and playing with a 6 person line up is to our advantage considering the depth we believe we have on our team."
The field will consist of 15 teams, including 9th ranked Cal, 14th ranked Texas, and 18th ranked Stanford. The rest of the teams competing include: Colorado State, Hawaii, North Carolina (20), Oregon (25), Pepperdine, San Diego State, San Jose State, UC Irvine, UTEP, and Washington.
Competing for the Cats in the Western Intercollegiate is senior George Cunningham, junior Travis Fredborg, sophomore David Laskin, sophomore Brad Reeves, freshman Trevor Werbylo, and sophomore Briggs Duce.
Cunningham and Reeves are both coming off of top 20 finishes, with a tie in 16th at the Duck Invitational. Cunningham now has 14 rounds at even par or lower.
Laskin and Werbylo have competed in all nine events and have six top 20 finishes between the both of them going into this tournament.
Duce joins the lineup after a successful Duck Invitational, where he tied in 16th place. Fredborg rejoins the lineup, and will compete in his seventh tournament, with two top twenty finishes this season.
