Cats Top 4th-Ranked Beavers to Even Series

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats had five players register multiple-hit games and got a strong outing from starter Michael Flynn to beat No. 4 Oregon State 15-4 Saturday night at Hi Corbett Field.

Arizona improved to 18-11 on the season and 3-5 in Pac-12 play. Oregon State dropped to 24-5 and 7-4 in the league. It marked Arizona's first win versus a Top 5 team since beating No. 4 Mississippi State in the 2016 Super Regionals. It was Oregon State's most lopsided loss since 2014 and the most runs the Beavers have surrendered in a game since 2012.

Arizona's offense came alive in front of the 4,284 fans in attendance at Hi Corbett Saturday, pounding out 15 hits and getting to Beavers starter Luke Heimlich, who came into the game with a 7-0 record. The Cats knocked Heimlich out after just 3 1/3 innings, tagging him for six runs on nine hits.

Meanwhile, Flynn worked into the sixth inning, and earned the win, improving to 5-1 on the season.

For the second straight night, the Beavers struck first and took an early lead. After a leadoff triple from Steven Kwan, second baseman Andy Armstrong dropped down a safety squeeze bunt to score Kwan and make it 1-0 two batters into the game. But Flynn battled through the rest of the inning, working around a double, to hold the Beavers to just the one run.

The Wildcats didn't waste any time responding, however. In the bottom half of the first, Cal Stevenson led off with a single and moved to second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch. He was driven in on an RBI single from Alfonso Rivas to tie the game at one apiece. Later in the inning, with two men on, freshman Blake Paugh singled to center to score Nick Quintana, who singled two batters earlier.

Trailing 2-1, Oregon State answered back in the second on an RBI double from shortstop Cadyn Grenier to tie it back up at two.

But again, Arizona had a response in the bottom half. Ryan Haug singled with one out and Cameron Cannon followed two batters later with a two-out single to put two men on for the third-place hitter, Rivas. Rivas doubled down the left field line to score both runners and give Arizona a 4-2 lead.

Flynn worked around a pair of baserunners in the third to keep the Beavers off the scoreboard, and then posted a perfect fourth inning to keep it 4-2. The Cats added to the lead in the bottom half to give the righty a bigger cushion.

Ryan Haug started the inning by being hit by a pitch and moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt from Stevenson. Cannon and Rivas followed with back-to-back walks to load the bases for Quintana. Quintana followed with the third straight walk in the inning to plate Haug and make it 5-2. Cesar Salazar drove in Cannon with an RBI groundout to second to give Arizona a four-run lead.

In the sixth, Oregon State again cut into Arizona's lead, scoring a pair of runs and making it 6-4. But in the seventh, Arizona got an RBI single from Haug to score Mitchell Morimoto to make it 7-4. The Cats then blew the game open in the eighth with an eight-run inning. Quintana had an RBI double, shortstop Seve Romo had an RBI single, Morimoto dropped down a safety squeeze that plated a run and Stevenson had an RBI on a hit by pitch.

Then, with the bases loaded, Cannon hit his second grand slam of the season to make it 15-4. Cannon has now homered in three straight games and four of his last five.

Senior Zach Stone tossed a scoreless ninth to close out the win.

Cannon finished 2 for 4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Rivas was 3 for 5 with three RBI and a run scored. Quintana was 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Haug was 2 for 3 with three runs scored and an RBI and Romo was 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored. Stevenson finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The Cats and Beavers will wrap up their three-game series Sunday afternoon at Hi Corbett. First pitch is slated for 12:05 p.m.
