Edior's Seventh-Inning Double Lifts Cats in Game 1

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Hillary Edior broke up a scoreless game with a two-out, pinch-hit RBI double in the top of the seventh inning, leading ninth-ranked Arizona to a series-opening victory, 1-0 over Stanford on Thursday afternoon in Palo Alto, California.

The seventh-inning double was the only run of the game and all that Taylor McQuillin needed to pick up win No. 25 and shutout No. 13, figures that rank first in the Pac-12. McQuillin allowed just four hits in the game while striking out seven Cardinal batters. She improved to 25-9 in 2018.

Arizona's offense struggled all game against Stanford starter Carolyn Lee, who gave up five hits in the complete game. Lee had retired 10 straight Wildcats, including the first two batters of the seventh inning, before Ivy Davis worked a 10-pitch walk to give the Cats a chance in the seventh. With the count 3-2 on the pinch-hitter Edior, Davis got a head start from first, one that would come in handy as she raced around the bases on Edior's double into the left-field corner. Edior entered the game with just 11 at-bats and zero RBI this conference season.

UA's victory in the pitchers' duel gave it 10 straight wins and extended a stretch of now 13 straight games in which UA has allowed three or fewer runs. Arizona's ERA over the last 13 games dropped to 0.76. Overall, the Cats improved to 39-13, 12-10 Pac-12 while Stanford fell to 23-30, 2-20 Pac-12. UA will try to clinch the series on Friday in game 2 at 5 p.m. MST.

The Cats outhit the Cardinal 5-4 in the game; Jenna Kean led UA with two hits, her fifth multi-hit game this season. Jessie Harper hit her team-best 14th double, which is her Pac-12-best 33rd extra-base hit this season.

Up next: Arizona and Stanford meet for game 2 at 5 p.m. on Friday.
