BERKELEY, Calif. -- The Arizona Wildcats dropped the second game of the series at Cal on Saturday night, falling to the Golden Bears 16-6 at Evans Diamond.
Cal scored 11 runs over their final three innings to erase a 6-5 deficit and earn the win for the second straight night. The loss dropped Arizona to 29-19 on the season and 10-13 in Pac-12 play. Cal improved to 28-19 and 13-13 in league play.
The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the third inning to grab a 4-0 advantage.
Donta Williams walked to lead off the inning and
Matt Fraizer followed with a hit by pitch to put two men on for
Jacob Blas. Blas dropped down a bunt and pitcher Jared Horn decided to go to third to try to get Williams.
But the throw sailed into foul territory, allowing Williams to score and Fraizer and Blas to each move up a base.
Cal Stevenson made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to score Fraizer. After a walk to Alfonso Rivas,
Nick Quintana dropped down a sacrifice bunt, which scored Blas.
Cesar Salazar made it 4-0 with a single through the right side to score Rivas.
But Cal answered right back off starter
Michael Flynn. Jonah Davis hit a grand slam with one out to tie the game at four. Two batters later, Max Flower hit a solo home run to give Cal a 5-4 lead.
That remained the score until the sixth inning.
Seve Romo led off the frame with a solo home run to left on a 1-0 pitch to tie the game at five. It was the first home run of Romo's career.
The Cats got another that inning when Blas doubled home Williams with one out to make it 6-5. But in the bottom half of the inning, Ripken Reyes had an RBI single to tie it and then Andrew Vaughn hit a three-run home run to give Cal a 9-6 lead. Cal added another run in the seventh to make it 10-6 and then exploded for six runs in the eighth to get a 10-run cushion and ice the game.
Williams finished 1 for 3 with two runs scored and Romo was 1 for 2 with his home run. Salazar extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his RBI single in the third.
Flynn pitched into the sixth inning, and gave up six runs. He struck out 8 in his outing. Reliever
Zach Stone took the loss for Arizona.
The Cats and Bears will close out their three-game series Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1:15 p.m. Right-hander Aaron Shortridge will start for Cal. Arizona has yet to announce a starter.
