LU-KICKS HAVRISIK: Arizona junior placekicker
Lucas Havrisik was named the Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday afternoon following his performance against Washington. He is enjoying one of the finest seasons by any kicker nationally this year. First, beginning with kickoffs, Havrisik has made returning one of his kicks nearly impossible. The Wildcats have a touchback percentage of 84.21, which ranks fifth in the country. Havrisik, of course, has taken every kickoff for the Wildcats this season. Arizona's 32 touchbacks total are sixth most in the country. Havrisik's average of 64.61 yards per kickoff ranks sixth in the country. He has also yet to kick one out of bounds. As for his field goals, Havrisik converted a 50-yard field goal Saturday versus Washington. He now has two makes from 50 yards or longer this season. He is one of only nine kickers nationally to have multiple makes from 50+. Havrisik has made four field goals from 50 yards and out in his three-year career. Consider as a program, Arizona had just four field goals from 50 or deeper from 1997 to 2016. Havrisik is the first Arizona kicker to have two makes from 50 yards or longer in the same season since Matthew Peyton in 1996. Havrisik has four makes this year from 40+, which is tied for fourth-best nationally.
HOMETOWN HEROES: The Arizona wide receiver room has a strong Tucson feel to it with three local players in
Stanley Berryhill III,
Drew Dixon and
Jamarye Joiner. The three Tucsonans have combined for 41 catches for 579 yards and six touchdowns in the first six games of the season. Adding to the impressiveness of it is that all three players are underclassmen. Berryhill and Dixon are both redshirt sophomores, while Joiner is a redshirt freshman. Dixon had his first career catch against Hawai'i, and then had four catches for 46 yards and a touchdown against NAU. Dixon's four catches against the Lumberjacks tied for the game-high with Berryhill and senior
Cedric Peterson. Joiner, who had four catches in the opener against Hawai'i, had one catch for 15 yards against NAU and two catches for 14 yards against Texas Tech, before a four-catch, 68-yard game against Colorado. Joiner had three catches for 55 yards and a touchdown against Washington. Dixon and Joiner were both high school quarterbacks, who transitioned to receiver. Both played their high school football in Tucson with Dixon attending Sabino High School and Joiner going to Cienega High School. Joiner and Berryhill each had three catches against UCLA. Dixon had two.
I'M MR. BRIGHTWELL: Junior running back
Gary Brightwell currently ranks second on the team with 44 rushing attempts and 286 yards this season, 85 of which he picked up on a career-high 21 carries in the Cats third game of the year against Texas Tech. He picked up four rushing touchdowns across a three-game stretch against Northern Arizona (1), Texas Tech (2), and UCLA (1) – his four rushing scores are tied for the most on the team with
Nathan Tilford. His average carry of 6.5 yards per attempt is the fourth-best mark in the Pac-12 among qualified players (played in 75% of team games, 8 rushes per game). Brightwell rewrote the Arizona record books in week two against Northern Arizona – his 94-yard touchdown run against NAU tied Nic Grigsby (2009) for the second-longest run in school history, and was just two yards shy of tying the all-time record of 96 yards set by Trung Canidate in 1997. Through three seasons and 135 attempts, Brightwell has amassed 811 rushing yards for the Cats, good for an average of 6.0 yards per carry. His four touchdowns, 6.5 yards per carry, and 57.2 yards per game this season are all career-best marks for Brightwell.
BUILT TILFORD TOUGH: Redshirt sophomore running back
Nathan Tilford has made good use of his limited touches so far in 2019. On just 21 carries he has picked up 146 yards, good for 7.0 yards per attempt, and is tied for the team lead with four touchdowns. He scored once in the Wildcats season opener at Hawai'i, added a pair of scores in Arizona's road win over Colorado, and found the end zone once last weekend against Washington. Tilford, along with teammate
Gary Brightwell, is tied for eighth in the Pac-12 with four rushing touchdowns; he has reached that mark on just 21 carries, while the others tied at four have gotten there in 44 (Brightwell), 87 (Vavae Malepeai, USC), and 103 (Alex Fontenot). Four of Tilford's six career touchdowns have been rushes of five or fewer yards, with his 25-yard scoring scamper on Washington marking the longest touchdown rush of his career.
